Awkward Guests. Episodes on Women, Ideology and the Visual Arts in Spain (1833-1931)

image description

An exhibition examining the role of women in the Spanish art system of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“Awkward Guests. Episodes on Women, Ideology and the Visual Arts in Spain (1833-1931)” takes the form of a survey in two main sections: first presenting the image of women that was legitimised by the State through prizes, exhibitions and museums, and the position that women occupied in society at this period; secondly, showing some of the most important artworks produced by women in 19th- and 20th-century Spain, mapping the subordinate role that the system assigned to women.

Finally, it shows the sometimes epic journey that some women had to undertake to free themselves from the limitations imposed on their sex.
